Arden Osteopaths has begun practising at the Integral Healing Centre in Wollongong.
Principal osteopath Andre Stout trained at the British School of Osteopathy and worked in London before coming to Australia.
He also works at an osteopathic practice in Sydney.
With word of mouth increasing business Mr Stout hopes to establish another base in the northern suburbs.
What does an osteopath do?
An osteopath utilises a specific combination of very gentle and safe manual techniques.
Some, but by no means all, of these techniques are similar to those used by physiotherapists or chiropractors.
Mr Stout said the holistic philosophy of osteopathy was to use manual techniques to realign the body's structure to allow its own healing potential to take over.
He said osteopathy focused on the treatment of the joints, ligaments and muscles of the body.
Therefore most of the conditions treated relate to musculo-skeletal pain or disability, the most common of these being back and neck pain.
Mr Stout said osteopaths were trained to diagnose the exact source of the problem, recognising that a problem elsewhere in the body may be causing or maintaining the symptoms.
Mr Stout is also undertaking a research project at the University of Western Sydney on the impact of osteopathic treatment on ageing, with the hope of showing that cosmetic surgery is not the only way to look and feel younger.
